How many days do you need in Budapest? 311 places counted
How many days do you need in Budapest? The NomadSwipe app's Budapest data has 11 sights rated 4.0 or higher with 100 or more reviews, and at about five sights a day that is 2.2 days, so I would allow three. It is a counting rule, not a measured fact.
The counting rule
The data has no visit times, so I cannot measure how long a sight takes. What I can do is count, and I state the rule so you can change it. A day holds about 6 to 8 stops, and I count 4 to 6 of them as sights and the rest as food or drink. My day-by-day Budapest 3-day itinerary uses 24 stops over three days (8 a day, with 15 sights, so 5 a day). I use that 5 a day as the middle case. The rule is then: days = sights worth seeing ÷ sights per day. It is my own choice, not a measured fact, and the sensitivity table below shows what happens if you walk faster or slower.
Which sights count is also a choice. I counted the 11 sights stored with a rating of 4.0 or higher and 100 or more reviews as the "well-rated" set, and all 23 real sight cards as the "everything" set.
How many days: what 1 to 5 days hold
I sorted the 23 sight cards by stored review count and cut them into days of five. This is a count of the app's data, not a route: the stops in a row are the next most-reviewed ones, so they are not always near each other. For a routed plan with times of day, use the 3-day guide.
| Days | New sights that fit (rating / reviews) | Well-rated sights covered (of 11) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Hungarian Parliament Building (4.6 / 42,936), Fisherman's Bastion (4.6 / 32,769), House of Terror Museum (3.9 / 11,256), Liberty Bridge (4.4 / 3,246), Hungarian National Gallery (4.2 / 2,787) | 4 |
| 2 days | Budapest Pinball Museum (4.8 / 2,383), Vaci Street (3.9 / 2,333), Buda Hill Funicular (3.6 / 2,107), Memento Park (4.0 / 1,918, 9.0 km out), Holokauszt Emlékközpont (4.4 / 1,674) | 7 |
| 3 days | Hungarian National Museum (4.1 / 1,614), Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum (4.6 / 869), Matthias Fountain (4.3 / 786), Budapest History Museum - Castle Museum (3.7 / 467), Little Princess statue (4.1 / 388) | 11 (all) |
| 4 days | Cave Church (4.2 / 35), Sándor Palace (3.6 / 0), Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, Museum of Fine Arts (the last three have no stored rating) | 11 |
| 5 days | Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts (no rating), Varhegy (rating 0), Buda Castle (rating 0): three cards, so about 0.6 of a day | 11 |
Two things to read carefully. First, ranking by review count is a popularity proxy: Buda Castle is stored with a rating of 0 and no review count, so it sits last here even though it belongs on a first visit. Second, from day 4 on the sights have 35 reviews or none, so the data gives you no quality signal for them, only that they exist as cards.
The numbers behind the rule
The Budapest deck has 311 cards and 311 distinct place IDs, and 276 of them sit within 10 km of a centre point I chose at Deák Ferenc tér. These are the 276, grouped by the card's stored type.
| Group | Cards | With stored hours | Rated 4.0+ with 100+ reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sights (museum, tourist attraction, historical site, church, castle, zoo, park) | 25 | 13 | 10 |
| Parliament (typed government site) and the funicular (typed rail service) | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| Places to eat and drink (restaurants, coffee, bakeries, pizza, brunch and similar) | 193 | 135 | 76 |
| Bars and clubs | 22 | 17 | 7 |
| Stays (lodging) | 32 | 0 | 26 |
| Other (a school, a travel service) | 2 | 1 | 2 |
| All within 10 km | 276 | 167 | 122 |
The 27 sight and transport cards are not 27 sights. Four of the eight cards typed as tourist attractions are bars or clubs by name (Broadwayclub, Hashtag Bar Budapest, New Orleans Club and Mambo Cafe Bar), so the count of real sights is 23. Of those 23, 12 have stored opening hours and 11 do not. Of the 11 well-rated sights, 8 have stored hours.
The same rule at 4 and 6 sights a day
Since sights per day is my own assumption, here is the answer at three paces. Nothing else changes.
| Sights per day | Days for the 11 well-rated | Days for all 23 |
|---|---|---|
| 4 (slow, with long meals) | 2.8 | 5.8 |
| 5 (my middle case) | 2.2 | 4.6 |
| 6 (fast) | 1.8 | 3.8 |
Across the three paces the well-rated sights need between 1.8 and 2.8 days, which is why I would allow three. Seeing everything needs between 3.8 and 5.8 days, so four to six.
Who needs fewer days, who needs more
- Two days is enough if you only want the best-known sights. The top ten by reviews cover 7 of the 11 well-rated ones, and the Budapest 3-day guide says its first two days stand alone as a 2-day plan.
- Three days is the default if you want all 11 well-rated sights without rushing. Three days at five sights is 15 slots, and the 15 most-reviewed sights hold all 11.
- Four or more days if you want museums and the cards with few or no reviews, you walk slowly (4 a day), or you add places the deck lacks. Searching the card titles found no card for St. Stephen's Basilica, the Széchenyi or Gellért baths, the Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, the Great Market Hall or a synagogue. Each one you add as your own pin is another sight in the count, so five added places is about one more day at five a day.
- Food and nightlife do not change the number. The deck has 193 places to eat and drink plus 22 bars and clubs within 10 km, 83 of them rated 4.0+ with 100+ reviews. At about three food stops a day you use a handful.
- Memento Park is the outlier. It is stored 9.0 km from my centre point by straight line, so a day that includes it is a different shape from the rest.
If you are deciding between a short and a long stay in general, the 48-hour checklist for a weekend city break covers a two-day trip, and a 2-day Vienna plan built the same way shows what a compact plan looks like in a neighbouring city.
What this count cannot tell you
- How long a sight takes. The data has no visit times, so five a day is my assumption, not a measurement. A museum you love can take half a day.
- Prices, tickets and getting around. I did not read them for this page, so check each place's own site and a transit map.
- Opening days. 12 of the 23 sights have stored hours, and they are a May 2026 snapshot. Check the day you plan to go.
- Sights the deck lacks. A deck holds only the places the app has, so a famous sight with no card is not counted.
How I would run this count in NomadSwipe
I built NomadSwipe, so I have an interest here, and this is a method rather than a trip I took. NomadSwipe (Android) shows real places in a city as cards with category, rating, distance and opening status. You swipe right to save and left to skip, and your saved places show on a map. To test your own number of days, I would swipe right on the sights only, count the saves, and divide by the pace you expect. The app stores no visit times, so the pace is your call. Because the deck lacks some famous names, add those as custom pins. For a routed version of the Budapest sights, see the Budapest itinerary for three days, and for the shortlist method, how I shortlist things to do in a new city. iPhone is coming soon.
Count your own Budapest sights
I built NomadSwipe to swipe real places in a city, save the ones you like and see them on a map. It is Android only for now.
Questions about how many days to spend in Budapest
Is 3 days enough in Budapest?
By my counting rule, yes for the sights the app's data rates well. The Budapest deck has 11 sights rated 4.0 or higher with 100 or more reviews within 10 km, and three days at five sights a day is 15 slots. Three days is not enough if you want every sight card (23, so about 4.6 days) or if you add places the deck lacks, such as the baths or St. Stephen's Basilica.
What should I see in Budapest in 4 days?
Take the sights in order of stored review count. Days 1 to 3 hold the 15 most-reviewed sights, including all 11 rated 4.0 or higher, from the Hungarian Parliament Building to the Little Princess statue. Day 4 takes the cards with 35 reviews or none: the Cave Church, Sándor Palace, the zoo, the Hospital in the Rock and the Museum of Fine Arts. The day-count table above names every stop.
Is 2 days enough in Budapest?
Two days holds 10 sights at five a day, which covers 7 of the 11 well-rated ones. If you push to six sights a day the 11 fit in 1.8 days. My Budapest 3-day guide says days 1 and 2 stand alone as a 2-day plan: Castle Hill, then the Parliament and central Pest.
Does the number of restaurants change how many days I need?
Not in this data. Within 10 km the deck has 215 places to eat and drink, 83 of them rated 4.0 or higher with 100 or more reviews. At about three food or drink stops a day, five days use 15 of them, so sights set the day count and food never does.
Findings, method and sample
Sample and method. I read the NomadSwipe app's place data on 8 November 2026 with read-only queries. Budapest is one destination row (country code HUN) with 311 cards, all written on 17 May 2026, and the 311 cards have 311 distinct Google place IDs, so no card was removed as a duplicate. I measured distance by straight line from a centre point I chose at Deák Ferenc tér (47.4979 N, 19.0540 E) and kept the 276 cards within 10 km. I grouped cards by their stored type: sights are museum, tourist attraction, historical site, church, castle, zoo and park, with the Parliament (typed government site) and the funicular (typed rail service) listed apart. "Well-rated" means a stored rating of 4.0 or higher with 100 or more stored reviews. I computed the days myself as sights divided by sights per day.
- 311 cards, 311 distinct place IDs, 276 within 10 km, 167 of those 276 with stored opening hours.
- Within 10 km: 25 sight cards, 2 more sight-or-transport cards, 193 places to eat and drink, 22 bars and clubs, 32 stays and 2 other.
- Four of the 8 tourist-attraction cards are bars or clubs by name, which leaves 23 real sights.
- 11 sights are rated 4.0+ with 100+ reviews: Parliament, Fisherman's Bastion, Liberty Bridge, National Gallery, Pinball Museum, Memento Park, Holokauszt Emlékközpont, National Museum, Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum, Matthias Fountain and the Little Princess statue. The House of Terror Museum (3.9 from 11,256 reviews), Vaci Street (3.9), the funicular (3.6) and the Budapest History Museum (3.7) fall just below 4.0.
- The 15 most-reviewed sights hold all 11 well-rated ones. The remaining 8 have 35 reviews or fewer, or no usable rating.
- Days by rule: 11 well-rated sights need 1.8, 2.2 or 2.8 days at 6, 5 or 4 sights a day, and all 23 need 3.8, 4.6 or 5.8.
- 8 of the 11 well-rated sights have stored hours, and 12 of the 23 sights do.
- Searching card titles found no card for St. Stephen's Basilica, the Széchenyi or Gellért baths, the Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, the Great Market Hall or a synagogue. The only title matches were a hotel on Margaret Island, an Opera-named hotel and brunch café, and a card named Ruin Bars Budapest typed as a restaurant with no rating.
Limits: this is a counting rule, not a measured visit time, and five sights a day is my assumption taken from my own 3-day guide. Ranking by review count favours popular cards and under-ranks famous ones stored with no rating, such as Buda Castle. All rows were written on 17 May 2026, so ratings, review counts and hours may have changed. I read no third-party page for this page, so it has no ticket, price or transit facts. The 10 km box and the centre point are my choices, and stays are counted but never limit the day count.
